Oahu

Facts:

  • Oahu is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands, with a coastline of 112 miles.
  • The island of Oahu is formed from the remnants of two large shield volcanoes, the older Waianae Volcano on Oahu’s west side, and the younger Koolau Volcano on Oahu’s east side.
  • Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and Waikiki are all located on Oahu.
  • Honolulu is the largest city in the world. That is because Hawaii’s State Constitution states that any island not named as belonging to a county belongs to Honolulu. This makes the entire island of Oahu, where Honolulu is located, plus all the other small, uninhabited islands, islets and atolls part of Honolulu.
  • Iolani Palace, located in downtown Honolulu, is the only Royal Palace in the United States.
  • Honolulu is the second most expensive city in the United States. Anchorage, Alaska is the most expensive.
  • Oahu is the most-visited Hawaiian Island

Highest point:

  • The highest point on Oahu is Mt. Kaala, which rises 4,025 feet (or 1,226 m) above sea level.
